Between the previous book (1949) and this one (1956), Vinicius' life went through a series of changes. A new marriage (with Lila Bôscoli), the birth of two daughters (Georgiana and Luciana), the death of her father, her departure to Paris, the final conception of the show Orfeu da Conceição and her meeting with her partner Tom Jobim are some of them.

The book consists of a collection of 17 poems written during this period, reaffirming Vinicius's lyrical diction and inaugurating some new themes for his poetry, such as the workers' cause, the theme of the famous poem “O operário em construction”.
